The Story

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, introduced in 1955, was one of the most iconic sports cars of the 1950s. Known for its distinctive gullwing doors that opened upward due to the car's tubular space frame construction, the 300 SL was both a technological marvel and a design masterpiece. It featured the world's first production fuel-injected engine, a 3.0-liter straight-six that produced 215 horsepower, making it capable of reaching speeds over 160 mph. The 300 SL was born from Mercedes-Benz's successful W194 racing car and represented the German manufacturer's return to high-performance automobile production after World War II. Only 1,400 Gullwing coupes were produced between 1955 and 1957, making it one of the most sought-after collector cars today.
