The Story
The Morgan Dollar was first minted in 1878 following the Bland-Allison Act, which mandated the U.S. Treasury to purchase large quantities of silver and mint it into dollar coins. Designed by George T. Morgan, this coin's obverse Liberty head was modeled after Anna Willess Williams. The Carson City Mint, established primarily to coin silver from the Comstock Lode, produced this issue in relatively limited quantities compared to Philadelphia and San Francisco, making CC-mint Morgans especially popular among collectors today. The 1878-CC issue represents the first year of Carson City's participation in Morgan Dollar production, and pieces from this mint are often associated with the romantic history of the American West and the silver mining boom.
