The Story
The Morgan Dollar, designed by U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, was minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, following the Bland-Allison Act which mandated the government purchase large quantities of silver for coinage. The 1880-S issue is one of the most common Morgan dollar dates from the San Francisco Mint, with nearly 9 million pieces struck, making it widely available in high grades today due to large hoards released in later decades, including from the Treasury's silver dollar reserves. This particular example displays vivid rainbow/golden toning, likely from decades of storage in a coin album or bag, adding to its aesthetic and collector appeal.
