The Story
This coin was minted during the final year of British colonial rule in India, just prior to the country's independence and partition in August 1947. The iconic tiger design on the reverse was introduced by King George VI's administration and reflects the rich wildlife of the subcontinent.
These coins represent a transitional era in South Asian monetary history. Soon after independence, the newly formed Dominion of India and later Republic of India would redesign their currency, moving away from British monarchical portraits to indigenous national symbols. Beginning in 1946 and continuing onward, British Indian coinage underwent a major compositional shift due to post-war silver shortages, transitioning the half-rupee and quarter-rupee denominations to pure nickel. This particular specimen bears the dot mint mark identifying it as a product of the Bombay Mint during the twilight years of the British Raj.
