The Story
The 20-euro-cent coin is part of the common currency of the Eurozone, introduced in 2002. While one side features a common map of Europe designed by Luc Luycx, individual euro-using countries design their own national obverse. Austria's national side for the 20-cent denomination, designed by Josef Kaiser, depicts the Baroque Belvedere Palace in Vienna, which holds great significance in Austrian history as the site where the Austrian State Treaty was signed in 1955, restoring the country's independence.
Minted by the Austrian Mint (Münze Österreich) in Vienna, this coin is struck in Nordic Gold, an alloy chosen for its unique color, antimicrobial properties, and resistance to tarnishing. The distinctive 'Spanish flower' shape with its seven notches makes the denomination easily identifiable by touch for the visually impaired.
