The Story
This is the final year of the Lincoln Wheat Cent series, which ran from 1909 to 1958, making this 1959-D specimen part of a transitional period. The Lincoln cent design was introduced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse featuring Lincoln's profile with 'LIBERTY' and 'IN GOD WE TRUST' inscribed. The 'D' mint mark indicates this coin was struck at the Denver Mint. 1959 marked the end of the wheat ears reverse design, as it was replaced by the Lincoln Memorial reverse in 1959, making this coin historically significant as one of the last wheat cents produced. The coin shows typical circulation wear consistent with its age and widespread use in commerce.
